Our After-Class Thrills:
Patricia Stein & Her Chemical Kit… finding out what you’re dealing with.
So you have a surface, you’re not sure what is on it, though. Eeek! Here’s how you figure it out so you know what your preparation steps / options should be:
Chemical testing for pre-finished wood furniture:
Step one: test for wax Scrape surface with fingernail - if it leaves a mark, it is waxed and either must be removed, or new finish must be wax based.

Step two: test for oil based paint. Apply linseed oil on cotton swab (any vegetable oil will do). If it absorbs, it is oil. If it beads, it is either lacquer, shellac, varnish or polyurethane.

Step three: test for lacquer / shellac / poly. Apply acetone on cotton swab and rub on finish. If it dissolves completely it is lacquer. If it becomes tacky it is shellac or varnish (it evaporate & becomes sticky like a posterity note). If it beads it is polyurethane (little bubbles).

Step four: test for shellac / varnish. Apply denatured alcohol on cotton swab and rub on finish. If it dissolves completely, it is shellac. If it dissolves slowly, it is varnish (strip, or abrade & shellac to switch).

Kitchen Cabinet Gunk Removal: Magic recipe from Ann’s sister…
1 part vegetable oil
2 parts baking soda
Mix together with a spoon to make a paste then “go crazy” are the instructions. Use hands, cloth or sponge to apply.
